- I truly enjoyed the first part of A Discovery of Witches — the relatable heroine, the university setting, the focus on the history of science. But once the romance got going and we left Oxford, A Discovery of Witches lost its charm. I’m still curious about the blend of genetics, evolution, and alchemy, but the long sick romance dominated.
I loved it, but then I'm really interested in history and the writer Deborah Harkness is a history professor and both the books and the TV series were well informed historically speaking, so that really added to the dynamic for me. The vamps and witches are generic to the utmost and the third supernatural group daemons basically fairies were supposed to be brilliant and zany to the point of madness, but the author was completely incapable of creating such a character, so they were the worst of all.
